How To Follow The Diet

The Atkins Diet is divided into several steps that you will need to follow in order to get the best results. These phases are:


1. Initial Phase.

This is the first 14 days on the diet and you will be consuming less than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. You will eat only low-carbohydrate vegetables like tomatoes during this time. You probably be able to lose as much as 15 pounds before it is over.


2. Weight Loss Phase.

While you are in this phase, you will be able to increase the number of carbs that you consume by 5 grams per day.


3. Pre-Maintenance Phase.

Once you reach this phase, you will find that you are losing weight at a slower rate. You will be able to try other foods to see how your body reacts to them. If they don't increase your weight, you will be able to add them to your diet.  

 

4. Maintenance Phase.

Once you have reached your goal weight, you will begin the maintenance phase. At this point, you can add more carbs to your diet as long as they don't increase your weight. For example, you might be able to add whole wheat pasta to your allowed foods.


You should talk with your doctor before giving this diet a try, and it is important that you exercise regularly along with your diet. This will make it much easier for you to lose weight. If you have certain conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease or are pregnant you should not use the Atkins Diet.
